Now what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I remember when I got my first puppy as a young adult. I wish I knew then, what I know now. Or even a quarter of what I know now. I learned something new with every puppy and adult dog that I had through the years. And with over 25 years of being a dog trainer, I have seen and learned a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I won\u2019t go into choosing a breeder, or puppy, or the difference in pure bred versus mix, breeder versus rescue versus a pet shop puppy, in this article. I have trained and\/or owned it all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Genetics, and environment play a big role in how the puppy will turn out but so does training (which of course includes dog psychology).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you have your new puppy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It\u2019s peeing on your rug and ruining your carpet.<\/li><li>It\u2019s nipping your hands and you\u2019re afraid it\u2019s getting aggressive.<\/li><li>It barks at you, nips and runs.<\/li><li>It chews your shoes or maybe your coach purse.<\/li><li>It pulls on the leash during walks.<\/li><li>It steals items and runs and you can\u2019t catch it.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sounds familiar?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I get customers all of the time with these problems and more. It can be so frustrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just some of the things I hear puppies like to get a hold of, toilet paper, TV remotes, shoes, socks, and underwear. We have a solution for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people will get so frustrated they will just take the puppy to the shelter. At this point the dog has had several months, or years, of getting away with bad behaviors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, I get people wanting to learn things I teach in Puppy Class while doing Basic Obedience class, but there is only so much time. You really should do all three classes offered.  I think people think they get the same things in every class which is not true. Each class teaches some of the same things, but differently, as well as things that are totally new. Puppy, Basic and Advanced are like Elementary School, Middle School, and High School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are just some of the behaviors a puppy may have, which may even become adult behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022leash pulling \/ or refusing to walk on a leash<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022aggression<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022housebreaking<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022nipping<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022chewing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022stealing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022jumping<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022barking<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022digging<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022overall not listening<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022biting the leash<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bad behavior in an adult dog, that should have been fix or prevented as puppy, can really become a huge problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is the best way to raise your puppy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proper, early training and socialization!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/precisionk-9services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1732.jpg?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Puppy Socialization in Nitro WV Puppy Training \" class=\"wp-image-29\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/precisionk-9services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1732.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/precisionk-9services.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/IMG_1732.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption>Socializing on a playground.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Early, proper socialization, is a must. And if you miss that window of opportunity, you miss it. You\u2019ll never be able to go back in time and do it or do it over. Have rules from the moment it steps inside your door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a fallacy that you can\u2019t train a puppy until it is 6 months old. This is why we offer puppy classes (<a href=\"http:\/\/precisionk-9services.com\/PetDogTrainingPuppyClass.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/precisionk-9services.com\/PetDogTrainingPuppyClass.html<\/a>) at 8 weeks of age through 5 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be consistent, in your training, and the correcting of any bad behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to have a proper plan of attack, this of course comes from a knowledgeable trainer <a href=\"http:\/\/precisionk-9services.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(http:\/\/precisionk-9services.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a good knowledgeable trainer with years of experience has built up a lot of tools for their training toolbox \ud83e\uddf0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to have patience, some behaviors may take you a little longer than others to fix, such as nipping or housebreaking. But, it&#8217;s usually something your doing wrong, such as consistency. Watch for a blog on one of those in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to be Alpha. (yes I said it) The dog needs to see you as an authority figure, you can\u2019t be a wimp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you certainly can not be afraid of your puppy. I have seen people afraid of their 3-4 month old puppies. At this age they aren\u2019t serious, if they were, you\u2019d have a HUGE issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clients tend to tell me their puppy \u201cjust has normal puppy behaviors\u201d, as if the puppy will just grow out of these behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you allow what seems to be \u201cpuppy behaviors\u201d to continue, they can become adult behaviors. And the longer they go on, the harder it can be to fix them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A dog without structure can become dangerous.
